How to Extend Your Bali Visa on Arrival in 2026: The New Biometric Rules for Australians

If you're an Australian on a 30-day Visa on Arrival and want to stay longer in Bali, you can extend it once for another 30 days - taking you to 60 days total. The big change for 2026 is that the extension can no longer be completed entirely online: you must attend an Indonesian immigration office in person for fingerprints, a photo and a short interview. The extension fee is IDR 500,000 (roughly AUD 45–50, depending on the rate on the day).

That single rule change catches out more Australians than anything else we see at MyVisitVisa. Below is exactly how the process works now, what it costs, how long it takes, and the timing mistakes that turn a relaxed extension into an overstay fine.

First, Which Visa Are You Actually On?

Extensions only apply to certain visa types, so check your stamp or approval email before you plan anything.

Bali Visa

Australians are not eligible for visa-free tourist entry to Indonesia. You need either an e-VOA purchased before you fly, a VOA bought on arrival, or a longer e-visa. If someone told you Australians can just turn up, they're working off pre-2022 information.

The 2026 Extension Process, Step by Step

Step 1 - Start online, but don't assume that's the end of it

You lodge the extension application through the official Indonesian immigration portal at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. You'll upload your passport bio page, your current VOA/entry stamp, and pay the fee electronically. The system will then assign you an immigration office and, in most cases, an appointment.

The online lodgement is the administrative half. The identity half happens in person.

Step 2 - Attend the immigration office for biometrics

Since Indonesia reintroduced mandatory biometric attendance in mid-2025, every extension applicant must physically appear to provide:

  • Fingerprint scans

  • A digital photograph

  • A digital signature

  • A short interview (usually a few questions about your purpose and departure plans)

You cannot send an agent in your place for the biometric step. An agent can absolutely lodge and manage the paperwork for you - that's genuinely useful - but your fingerprints have to be yours.

Step 3 - Wait for approval and collection

Processing after biometrics generally runs 3–7 working days in Bali and can stretch considerably longer in Jakarta. Your passport may be held during part of this, which matters if you were planning a side trip to Lombok or the Gilis mid-process.

Step 4 - Check the new expiry date before you leave the counter

Read the new stamp or digital approval carefully. Extensions run from the expiry of your original 30 days, not from the day you applied - so applying early does not cost you days. But a data-entry error on your expiry date is your problem at the airport, not theirs.

What It Actually Costs in 2026

Bali Visa Cost

AUD figures are indicative only - the IDR/AUD rate moves, and card issuers add their own conversion margin. Always treat the IDR amount as the real number.

The Bali Tourism Levy is separate from your visa and catches people out constantly. It's a one-time IDR 150,000 payment per person, paid through the official Love Bali system. The only official domain is lovebali.baliprov.go.id - lookalike .com and .org sites charge two to three times the real amount and are not affiliated with the Bali government. Pay before you fly, save the QR voucher to your phone, and screenshot it in case you have no signal at the airport.

Timing: The Mistake That Costs Real Money

Here's the advice we give every client, and it's the single most valuable thing in this article.

Apply for your extension 7–14 days before your 30 days expire. Not on day 28. Not the day before.

Why: biometric appointment slots are finite, Bali immigration offices close for Indonesian public holidays and Nyepi (the island effectively shuts down for a full day), and processing runs on working days only. A long weekend can eat your entire buffer.

Overstaying carries a daily fine per person - and for longer overstays, deportation and re-entry bans are on the table. It's an expensive way to save a week of planning.

Documents to Have Ready

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond your intended departure, with blank pages

  • Your VOA receipt / e-VOA approval and arrival stamp

  • A recent passport-style photo meeting Indonesian specs (plain background, no glasses, full face visible)

  • Payment method that works internationally

Don't Forget the All Indonesia Arrival Card

Separate from the visa: every international arrival must submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card digitally. It merged the old paper arrival card, the electronic customs declaration and the health declaration into one free submission at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id. Submit it within 72 hours before arrival and keep the QR code. It's free - anyone charging you for it is reselling a free government form.

Common Reasons Extensions Get Rejected or Delayed

  • No onward ticket. Officers want evidence you intend to leave. A booked flight solves this.

  • Passport under 6 months validity. Renew before you fly, not while you're there.

  • Applying too late. Some offices won't accept applications submitted very close to expiry.

  • Blurry or cropped document uploads. Photograph on a flat surface in daylight, not at an angle.

  • Wrong visa type. A VOA already extended once cannot be extended again - you must do a border run or leave.

  • Name mismatches. Your application must match your passport exactly, including middle names.

Should You Extend, or Just Get a 60-Day Visa Upfront?

If you already know you're staying more than 30 days, applying for a longer-validity tourist e-visa before departure is usually the smoother path. You skip the immigration office queue, the biometric appointment and the risk of holiday closures entirely. The upfront cost is higher, but so is the certainty - and your time in Bali is worth more than the difference.

If you're genuinely undecided, take the VOA and keep the extension as your backup. Just diarise the application date the moment you land.

FAQ

Can I extend my Bali VOA more than once?

No. The Visa on Arrival allows one 30-day extension only, for a maximum stay of 60 days. After that you must leave Indonesia.

Can an agent do the whole extension for me?

An agent can lodge the application and handle the paperwork, but the biometric step - fingerprints, photo, signature, interview - must be done by you in person at the immigration office.

How long does a Bali VOA extension take in 2026?

Typically, 3–7 working days in Bali once biometrics are complete. Jakarta and some regional offices take longer. Build in a buffer for public holidays.

Do Australians need a visa for Bali at all?

Yes. Australian passport holders are not eligible for visa-free tourist entry and need an e-VOA, VOA on arrival, or an appropriate e-visa.

Is the Bali Tourism Levy part of my visa fee?

No, it's separate - IDR 150,000 per person, paid once via the official Love Bali site. Your visa fee doesn't cover it.

What happens if I overstay by a few days?

Indonesia charges a daily overstay fine per person, payable before you can depart. Longer overstays can lead to deportation and re-entry bans, so treat your expiry date as firm.
