How long does a Laos eVisa take?
The official site says the eVisa is usually processed within 3 working days of the application and payment, and longer if anything needs checking or if it falls over a Lao public holiday. Apply at least a week before you fly.
Is the eVisa the actual visa?
No. You receive an eVisa approval letter. At the border you go to the eVisa lane, present your passport and the letter, and the visa is issued there. Travelling without the letter means entry is refused.
Which borders accept the Laos eVisa?
Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport, Lao-Thai Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, Boten International Checkpoint, Boten Railway Station and Khamsavath Railway Station. Other crossings do not accept it.
What do I need to apply for a Laos eVisa?
A photo of your passport bio page that shows the whole page including the two machine-readable lines at the bottom, and a 4x6 cm photograph taken within the last 6 months.

Visa Extension and Overstays
Can I extend my tourist visa once I’m in Laos?
Yes, you can extend your Laos e-Visa, but you need to apply for the extension at the Immigration Department in Vientiane or the Immigration Division Office of the province you are in, before your current visa expires, and you can extend it twice for a maximum stay of 90 days.
What If I overstayed in Laos?
The most convenient way to solve the problem is to pay the fine when you only overstay for one or two days. Payment can be made to the immigration officer at the airport when you exit the country. The fine is at least $10 per day or a possible prison time in severe cases or if you are unable to pay.
However, it is not the best way to deal with this issue as your passport will be marked by the officers with regards to the overstaying, which might affect your further visit to the country. In this case, we highly recommend you extend your expired visa. The Department of Immigration, Foreigner Control, and Visa Extension will extend visas for 30 days. As of February 19, 2021, the extension fee is 20,000 Lao kip (LAK) per day with an additional 30,000 LAK document fee. The total cost for a 30-day extension is currently 630,000 LAK (approximately $68).
In general, the Lao Immigration authority may forgive visa overstay fees if:
- The overstay is relatively short
- The overstay is self-reported (as opposed to Lao authorities learning of the overstay independently)
- There is a reasonable explanation for the overstay (e.g. hardship caused by COVID-19, etc.)
